(i am becoming nervous that all this talk about conservatives getting into the elections to remove incumbents in (2023)that aren’t “red” conservatives hasn’t materialized yet. Where are all these candidates that are going to challenge and take these seats? What happens on the last qualifying day, and no one shows up?)

December 2017, late one night , listening to the newsman speaking to Senator Wicker, dam, who is running against this man? To my chagrin, it was nobody. I had a strange thought cross the mind that startled me. Why not you? My mind was racing; this thought had never entered my mind, and I had never run for anything but the football league president. I couldn’t stop my thoughts from running wild. I made a two-page list of why I shouldn’t run and half a page of why I should, but the last item on the page for why to run stared me down, my future grandkids. Knowing my wife wouldn’t be happy was only part of the dilemma. Most everyone I knew giving me advice was saying hell, man, you won’t get one percent of the vote a waste of your time and money.

Sometimes the right time never shows up, or you miss it because of fear or many other things that block you. I hadn’t given a speech since 10th grade and hadn’t written as much as a sentence in 40 years(secretaries). I had no idea how to start my march to defeat or victory. Well-minded people reminded me often that incumbents win 96 percent of the time, which I already knew. US Senator was sitting on 4 or 5 million of lobbyist money. Me taking 50,000 out of my RETIREMENT account at the bank. I cast the die to give the people the choice of a conservative or liberal.

Do I believe I was wisest most capable of men to run against Senator Wicker, NO, but i was the only one at time willing to bare my sole and with what lttle money I had to make difference. My grandson that was with me with the campaign laughed that I rarely wrote a speech and never read the speech I wrote, how can you remember “papa” , my answer when speaking the truth you need not memorize.

I did figure out how to run my show; my speeches started drawing bigger and bigger crowds. I could, in the last month of the election, see that I was making inroads. I didn’t win, but I got almost 18 percent of the vote with less than 50 thousand dollars six months before the election. Never be afraid, ever. WE MUST NEVER LET THESE MEN RUN UNOPPOSED.
