A moment in time for a soldier in the middle of a firefight,
In a firefight one day, when nothing but chaos around, I noticed a calmness inside that I imagined to be death, maybe mine, with explosions all around, bullets cutting trees down to the ground, jets overhead dropping napalm so close you could smell. I wondered if this moment was my last; at least it came from calmness in my heart and mind and not fear. The strange feelings sometimes when seeing men lying dead and wounded on the ground all around you believe your time is coming, when As the moment passes, you turn around, machine gun on fire, and realize you haven’t died, the fear has no chance to take hold, is not enough time, as quickly as it began its ends. You collect your thoughts with a mouth so dry you can’t even talk, look around realize at this moment in time you haven’t lost. But for your eternity, it will stay alive, maybe not every day, but in some place and time, it never leaves.
