1968 first ambush, never in your life when you enter a kill zone will you ever have it erased from your mind. This zone is zeroed in to cause optimum kill area that they can have both weapons, rockets, and mortars falling like rain. It looks like no one will escape out alive. I recall I jumped into a shallow dug foxhole as three other men at almost the same time, I was first the three landed on top of me, my head sticking out watching the rockets and mortars explode not being able to move at all, they high above the foxhole with no protection at all. ( i was told after the fight it was funny looking)I couldn’t breathe and one explosion was so close it covered us with dirt I didn’t know if I had been wounded or not, couldn’t hear a thing. Once the men were off my only thought was to escape from the raining of death all around, there is only one direction you can go to maybe survive, thats foreward into the fire.
The American soldier, even in great fear, followed the fight to the bitter end. GOD bless
